The Motorcycle Safety League of Virginia, Inc. /Virginia Rider Training Program: Basic Rider Education Program is for anyone possessing a valid driver's license or learner's permit who wants to learn how to safely ride a (two wheel) motorcycle. Instruction includes classroom and range work—motorcycles and helmets will be provided by the College. The class takes place at the Middletown Campus of Laurel Ridge Community College in Middletown, Virginia. Participants take part in classroom instruction and on course riding on Saturday and Sunday for weekend classes and Wednesday through Friday for weekday evening classes. Students learn the basic skills of two wheel motorcycle operation, effective braking, turning skills and obstacle avoidance, as well as safe riding strategies. Classes are offered many weekends and evenings March thru November and occur rain or shine. Instructors for the MSLVI/VRTP: Basic Rider Course are all experienced motorcyclists and are nationally certified by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation.

 

WEEKEND 2-DAY SCHEDULE - Sat. 8:00 am to 5:00pm (w/30 min. lunch break), Sun. 8:00 am to 5:00 pm (w/30 min. lunch break): Students provide their own snacks, drinks and lunches. All participants must arrive promptly for all sessions and plan to stay for entire class as directed by instructor. Those arriving late for any class will be declined admission (readmission) and forfeit their class registration fee.

 

LICENSE ENDORSEMENT: Individuals who successfully complete the Basic Rider Course will receive a two wheel Course Completion Certificate (card), which provides a waiver of the DMV written and riding tests and serves as a temporary 30-day provisionary motorcycle license. For permanent endorsement, individuals must take the certificate to their local DMV to have a class “M2” designation added to their license. Additionally, successful course completion may entitle them to a discount from their motorcycle insurance company.


Motorcycle Student Requirements:
  • Must possess either a valid driver's license or learner's permit
  • Wear long sturdy pants and a long-sleeved shirt
  • Bring a pair of full-fingered gloves
  • Helmet: ¾ or full face (minimum DOT rating); helmets are available for students to borrow
  • Eye Protection (Sunglasses are acceptable) 
  • Over-the-ankle, sturdy footwear with a LOW heel

Students Will Not Be Permitted To Ride Without This Clothing!

Any student under the age of 18 years participating in this class which is part of the Virginia Rider Training Program for Motorcycles will be required to have a Release, Waiver and Indemnification Statement signed by the participant’s parent or legal guardian. This form must be signed prior to the riding portion of this class. The release is available either in the Workforce Solutions Office and/or will be distributed at the first class. Under age participants receiving the form at the first class must bring the signed form back for the riding portion of the class. Failure to do so will result in not being allowed to ride the motorcycle and possible forfeiture of the class registration fee.
