« back to classes page
What is personalized learning? How does it impact my teaching practice? Why is it worth the effort? This workshop first makes the case about the need for personalized learning to make school more relevant, meaningful, and rigorous. A primary aim of schooling is for students to become self-directed learners who know how to manage themselves in a variety of situations. By helping students learn about themselves, we help them build the capacity to make wise decisions and navigate a turbulent and rapidly changing world. Participants will then be introduced to the metaphor of an audio sounding board to engineer increasing student participation in the design and development of their learning experiences. For each component, the teacher can turn the volume up or down, amplifying or reducing the amount of student agency as the teacher and students begin to feel more comfortable with student self-direction. The last part of the day focuses on how the role of teacher and student shifts in a personalized learning setting
As a result, participants will Identify broader goals of learning for their students and use the four attributes and/or seven elements  to begin to redesign a unit, course, or experience
