The Basic Rider Motorcycle Safety Education Program is for anyone possessing a valid driver's license or learner's permit who wants to learn how to safely ride a (two-wheel) motorcycle. Instruction includes classroom and range work—motorcycles and helmets will be provided by the college. Participants take part in classroom instruction and on-course riding on Saturday and Sunday for weekend classes, and Wednesday through Friday for weekday evening classes.
Students learn the basic skills of two-wheel motorcycle operation, effective braking, turning skills and obstacle avoidance, as well as safe riding strategies - skills otherwise acquired only after several years of trial-and-error riding. This course is sanctioned by The Motorcycle Safety League of Virginia, Inc. / Virginia Rider Training Program.
Classes are offered many weekends and evenings March thru November and occur rain or shine. Instructors for the MSLVI/VRTP: Basic Rider Course are all experienced motorcyclists and are nationally certified by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation.
Individuals who successfully complete the Basic Rider Course
will receive a two wheel Course Completion Certificate
(card), which provides a waiver of the DMV written and riding tests and serves as a 30-day provisionary motorcycle license classification. The individual must then take the certificate to the local DMV Customer Service Center to have a class “M2” designation added to his or her license. Additionally, many insurance companies provide premium discounts on motorcycle insurance to those who successfully complete this class. Enrollment is limited and classes fill quickly.
NOTE: This course applies only to the riding and operation of "two" wheel motorcycles. Those wishing for endorsement to operate a sidecar or trike should enroll in the Sidecar/Trike Course.
IMPORTANT NOTICE: All participants must arrive promptly for all sessions and plan to stay for the entire class as directed by the instructor. Those arriving late for the beginning of any class or returning late after a meal or class break will be declined admission and forfeit their class registration fee.
Motorcycle Student Requirements:
- Must possess either a valid driver's license or learner's permit
- Wear long sturdy pants and a long-sleeved shirt (no exposed skin through clothing)
- Bring a pair of full-fingered gloves (no exposed skin through gloves)
- Helmet: ¾ or full face (minimum DOT rating); helmets are available for students to borrow

Any student under the age of 18 years participating in this class, which is part of the Virginia Rider Training Program for Motorcycles, will be required to have a Release, Waiver and Indemnification Statement signed by the participant’s parent or legal guardian. This form must be signed and presented to the instructor prior to the riding portion of this class. The release is available either in the Workforce Solutions Office and/or will be distributed at the first class. Underage participants who have not gotten and completed this document in advance from the Workforce Solutions office, should plan to have a parent or legal guardian accompany them to the beginning of the first class to complete this document. Failure to do so will result in not being allowed to ride the motorcycle and possible forfeiture of the class registration.
