MOTORCYCLE SAFETY LEAGUE OF VIRGINIA, INC / VIRGINIA RIDER TRAINING PROGRAM APPROVED…
The Motorcycle Safety League of Virginia, Inc. /Virginia Rider Training Program: Sidecar/Trike Education Program (S/TEP) is designed to teach the novice or experienced sidecar or trike pilot the skills necessary to safely operate a three wheeled vehicle on the street, even if you’ve never ridden any kind of motorcycle. The 16-hour course takes the rider through the basics of motorcycle operation (controls are much the same as a two wheeled motorcycle), effective braking, turning skills and obstacle avoidance, as well as safe riding strategies - skills otherwise acquired only after several years of trial-and-error riding. The course consists of both classroom instruction and hands-on riding instruction. All riding is done on a closed course and will occur rain or shine. This class is a limited offering and may fill quickly. Instructors for the MSLVI/VRTP: S/TEP are all experienced motorcyclists and are nationally certified by the Evergreen Safety Council.
LOCATION - Middletown Campus of Lord Fairfax Community College in Middletown, Virginia.
SCHEDULE –Sat. 8:00AM to 5:00PM, Sun. 8:00AM to 5:00PM: Students provide their own snacks and drinks. A period for lunch will be provided each day.
IMPORTANT: All participants must arrive promptly for all sessions and plan to stay for entire class as directed by instructor. Those arriving late or leaving early for any class will be declined admission (readmission) and will forfeit their class registration fee.
Motorcycle Student Requirements:
- Equipment selection* (see instructions below)
- Must possess either a valid driver's license or learner's permit
- Wear long sturdy pants and a long-sleeved shirt (no exposed skin through clothing)
- Bring a pair of full-fingered gloves (no exposed skin through gloves)
- Helmet: ¾ or full face (minimum DOT rating); helmets are available for students to borrow
- Over-the-ankle, sturdy footwear with a LOW heel (no canvas shoes)
- Eye protection (eye glasses or sunglasses will suffice)
- Students Will Not Be Permitted To Ride Without This Clothing!
Under age Release, Waiver and Indemnification
Any student under the age of 18 years participating in this class which is part of the Virginia Rider Training Program for Motorcycles will be required to have a Release, Waiver and Indemnification Statement signed by the participant’s parent or legal guardian. This form must be signed prior to the riding portion of this class. The release is available either in the Workforce Solutions Office and/or will be distributed at the first class. Under age participants receiving the form at the first class must bring the signed form back for the riding portion of the class. Failure to do so will result in not being allowed to ride the motorcycle and possible forfeiture of the class registration.

Enrollees must contact Workforce Solutions at: 540-868-7021 with their selection of: sidecar rig, trike, or Canam, as equipment is provided to each class as requested by the students. Any student enrolling and not making a selection will be provided a trike by default.
Individuals who successfully complete the Sidecar/Trike Course will receive a three wheel Course Completion Certificate (card), which provides a waiver of the DMV written and riding tests and serves as a temporary 30-day provisionary motorcycle license. For permanent endorsement, individuals must take the certificate to their local DMV to have a class “M3” designation added to their license. Additionally, successful course completion may entitle them to a discount from their motorcycle insurance company.
NOTE: This course applies only to the riding and operation of "three" wheel trikes and/or sidecar motorcycles. Those wishing for endorsement to operate a two wheel motorcycle should enroll in the Basic Rider Safety Course
